Introduction

Electronics Engineer in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), Electronic Systems for Experiments group (ESE), Back-End section (BE).

You will:

- Join the Electronic Systems for Experiments Group (ESE) of the Experimental Physics Department (EP), which designs electronic systems for the experiments at CERN and also supplies a series of electronics related services. The Back-End section (BE) is in charge of the "off-detector" part of these systems: FPGA-based readout, trigger and control boards, modular electronics and power supplies, high speed optical data links.

- Be responsible for the FPGA implementation of the serial link protocols handling timing, trigger, data and control exchanges between the Back-End and the large number of custom ASICs hosted in the front-ends of the LHC experiments.

Functions

As a member of the GBT-FPGA Team, you will design, test and release custom firmware for serializers and deserializers for the newest FPGA types available on the market, able to communicate with the GigaBit Transceiver (GBT), a CERN-designed ASIC handling reliable multi-gigabit serial communication in high levels of radiation. This includes developing reference designs, simulation environments, test procedures and software environments to characterize the main properties of the firmware cores. You will evaluate your designs in various operating conditions.

As a member of the MTCA/ATCA evaluation and support team, you will play an important role in the technical evaluation and qualification of COTS xTCA components (e.g. shelves, power supplies, cooling units and payload modules), develop software and hardware for equipment test benches as well as establish test tools and procedures. You will also develop xTCA specific electronics (e.g. Hardware Platform Management) for use in the experiments and contribute to the technical specifications in view of product procurement.

Finally, you will provide support and documentation for both projects in terms of hardware, firmware and software.

Qualification required :

Higher technical diploma or Bachelor's degree in the field of radiation protection and experience of radiation protection and radioactive waste problematics, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies :

The experience required for this post is:

- Demonstrated experience in Modular electronics design.

- Demonstrated knowledge of FPGA design in VHDL, proficiency with both Xilinx and Altera tools.

- Experience of designing and implementing software for lab instrument control, as well as hardware development of test platforms.

- Experience in the fields of design, development and verification of complex FPGA programs, in particular involving high speed multi-gigabit SerDes, clock domain crossing techniques, clock and data recovery circuits, timing driven place and route, timing analysis.

- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laboratory instrumentation (e.g. high speed oscilloscopes, pattern generators, VNA).

- Experience of writing technical documentation.

Experience in the following fields will be considered as an advantage:

- Relevant knowledge of ATCA/MTCA, IPMI standards and specifications.
