INTRODUCTION System Administrator in the Physics Department (EP), LHCb Computing Group (LBC), Online System Administration team. YOU WILL JOIN: The Physics (EP) Department that carries out basic research in the field of experimental and theoretical particle physics. It aims at providing a stimulating scientific atmosphere and remains an important reference center for the European physics community. It contributes to the education and training of young scientists. The LHCb Computing Group (LBC) which is supporting the Large Hadron Collider Beauty experiment (LHCb), an experiment set up to explore what happened after the Big Bang that allowed matter to survive and build the Universe we inhabit today. The LHCb Online System Administration team, which is responsible for operating the large and diverse compute, network and storage infrastructure of the experiment. FUNCTIONS As a System Administrator in the EP/LBC Group, Online System Administration team, and under the supervision of an engineer or physicist, you will: Participate in the operation, maintenance, installation and decommissioning of the LHCb Online components e.g. the computing servers, the farm of PCs and the networking infrastructures at the experiment site. Provide first- and second-line support for physicists, engineers and administrative staff from both CERN and the world-wide LHCb-collaboration, on Hardware and Software related issues. QUALIFICATION REQUIRED Higher technical diploma in the field of computer-system or network administration, or equivalent*. *Please note that preference will be given to candidates with the above-mentioned qualifications: In principle consideration will not be given to applications from people with higher qualifications. EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES The experience required for this post is: Professional and practical experience with Linux and Windows system administration, including installation, task automation and shell scripting (bash, ruby, Powershell). Practical experience with the RedHat flavour of Linux (CentOS, ScientificLinux) and the Puppet configuration management system. Practical experience with monitoring frameworks and tools such as Icinga2, Nagios, Logstash, ElasticSearch. Proven experience with trouble-shooting Linux system and performance problems. Awareness of computer security issues. A good understanding of virtualization technologies would be an asset. THE TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POST ARE: IT Operations: health-monitoring, corrective actions, management of contact with suppliers. Problem management: manage incidents timely and ensure appropriate prioritization. Application support: assist lhcb detector experts in getting the right support of the it infrastructure for their applications. System software administration: installation and maintenance of system software such as operating systems, data management products, office automation products. Systems installation/decommissioning.
