Introduction

Radiation protection and radioactive waste specialist in the Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit, Radiation Protection Group (RP).

You will join the Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit, which acts, on behalf of the Director General, in matters of safety and the protection of personnel and environment. The Radiation Protection Group protects workers and public against the risks of exposure to ionising radiation, ensuring that exposure is kept as low as reasonably achievable. The duties of CERN's Radiation Protection Group include the assessment of radiation hazards of CERN's activities, including new accelerators and experiments, the definition of protective measures as well as the legally required monitoring of the exposure of radiation workers to ionising radiation.

Functions

As Radiation protection and radioactive waste Specialist you will work in the radioactive waste and service section, and you will be in charge of:

- Coordinating the reception, measurement, temporary storage and treatment of radioactive waste originated in CERN's accelerator tunnels, experimental areas, laboratories and workshops.

- Elaborating safety measures and working procedures, including providing advice to the personnel on radiation protection issues related to the handling, transport and disposal of radioactive substances.

- Participating to the validation of packages of radioactive waste in view of their elimination: this includes organising and performing laboratory measurements (including alpha, beta and gamma spectrometry, optical emission spectrometry, etc.) as well as the evaluation of the results.

- Performing technical supervision of the personnel performing treatment and handling of radioactive waste, including elaboration of work and dose planning and follow up operational dosimetry data.

- Preparing and supervising radiation protection aspects of dismantling projects.

- Supervising the general safety in the radioactive waste treatment centre and temporary storage facility.

- Writing reports, procedures and user manuals, and provide advice and training to users.

After a period of familiarisation you will:

Participate in and supervise projects in view of optimising elimination pathways.

Qualification required :

Higher technical diploma or Bachelor's degree in the field of radiation protection and experience of radiation protection and radioactive waste problematics, or equivalent.

Experience and competencies :

The experience required for this post is:

- Demonstrated experience in operational radiation protection, radiation protection instrumentation (alpha, beta gamma spectrometry, scintillation counting techniques) and legislation.

- Proven experience in management and elimination of radioactive waste.

- Proven skills in documenting radiological risk assessments and measurements.

- Experience in industrial machines operation for waste treatment would be an asset.

- Experience in regulatory constraints for transport of radioactive (ADR Class 7) goods would be an asset.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

- Knowledge of radiation exposure and protection.

- Knowledge of measurement techniques for ionising radiation.

- Knowledge of radioactive waste management.

- Knowledge of international transport regulation for radioactive substances.
